Desktop Wenger Says

Gilberto will miss the FA Cup tie with Manchester United. He was named in the Brazil side that travels to China for a friendly on Feb 12
Buggerfuck.

Music Part Deux

I've finished cataloging my CDs (with the exception of the 10 or so that CDDB doesn't know about which I'll have to do manually). Some statistics:

In terms tracks per artist, here's the top 10:
  1. Queen (305)
  2. The Beatles (226)*
  3. Beck (157)
  4. Freddie Mercury (124)*
  5. Pink Floyd (103)
  6. Foo Fighters (70)
  7. The Rolling Stones (68)
  8. The Beastie Boys (65)
  9. Smashing Pumpkins (60)
  10. Radiohead (58)
(* These numbers are helped greatly by having box sets for these artists).
Actually that list omits "Various Artists" who comes in at number 4 with 154 tracks. Obviously there's a bit of dodgy data in there, some tracks on "various artists" albums seem not to have been assigned to the correct artist. So I've got a bit of data cleaning up to do. Also the default HTML exporter is a tad unexciting so I might have do do something about that.

Music

I went to see the Foo Fighters at the Hordern Pavillion. I was an absolutely kick-ass night. I was about 4 or 5 meters from the front for most of the time so I had a good view and was jumping around with the rest of the nutters. By the end I was one seriously sweaty mofo.

In other music news I bought the Cibo Matto album Viva! La Woman which is pretty good. They've been playing one of the tracks on triple j and I remember them playing The Bronze on Buffy many moons ago. I went looking for their other album, Sterotype A, today to no avail. One of the helpful chicks at Sanity looked it up on the computer and it seems all Cibo Matto albums are deleted. Chaosmusic have it listed but on a 1-6 weeks expected delivery time which means they might never get it in. Bummer. Even my beloved Red Eye Records comes up blank for Cibo Matto, though they have a few related items featuring either Yuka Honda or Miho as well as some compilation albums.

Seeing as my blogs temporarily in the toilet

Check out this clever little design to improve the cleanliness of urinals. I'm fairly sure I've heard of similar things involving the faces of dislikable celebrities and politicians.

Of course the real problem is with bastards who piss on the seat. I'd like to see a solution to that, preferably one involving electricity. Failing that a toilet seat that was weighted so as to automatically lift when not sat on wouldn't be a bad idea.

I Rock

Or perhaps I'm just easily amused.

Well, there you have it

I watched 24 episodes of 24 in around 31 hours. It was pretty good.

DVDs

I went DVD hunting yesterday. My original intent was to get The Office and Red Dwarf. It seems that The Office doesn't come out until February. Undaunted by this minor setback I instead got 24. So far I'm up to 11:49 and it's kicking ass.

Odd Google Result

It appears that if you search for underground rap song list then my rather useless and incomplete list of CDs I own turns up on the first page of results. I can only imagine that whoever performed that search was somewhat disappointed.

Streaker

A fairly amusing video [3megs]

So I'm now the proud owner whollyshit.org. I haven't got a clue what I'm going to do with it but the pun was just too tasty. I notice that the owner of whollyshit.com doesn't appear to have done anything with his either. Also I've got to do something with whollyspirit.blogspot.com. I'm sure a 3-nil victory will help me get motivated.

Master of my own domain

I just registered a domain for myself. In the process of researching available names I went to Register.com and typed somethingshit in their search box. Register.com obviously employs some sort of thesaurus so they can offer you similar names to the one you request.

There's nothing particularly odd about that, but the thesaurus they use seems to have a pretty good knowledge of slang related to hard drugs. So if somethingshit.com wasn't available I'm safe in the knowledge that I could get somethingheroin, somethingsmack, somethingharry, somethinghorse, somethingbrownsugar, somethingjunk, somethingmorphine or somethingmorph.

Oddly it doesn't suggest somethingcrap or somethingturd which would be more in line with my original thoughts behind the enquiry.

Boomerang

It's an odd feeling when a part of your life that you both loved and hated and thought had been left behind hints that it might return. It probably won't and I'm worrying about nothing, but that's me for you.

The Onion is back too, that's unquestionably good news.

Oooh, Powerball has just been drawn. 35 45 23 38 10 (19). Better check my tickets, I got Tamsin some games for her birthday. Well, it doesn't look like either of us are going to be millionares today.

I'm really in the mood for a good beat-em-up. I'd play Buffy The Vampire Slayer but I'm on this annoying "Dreamers World" puzzle level rather than an arse kicking one and I'm not in the mood for that. Apparently if I got past the puzzle bits without falling to my doom I'd get to fight "Dark Buffy". That's be pretty cool.

CSS3 selector based sidebar

With a bit of help from the folks in the #mozilla channel on irc.mozilla.org (thanks glazou, bbaetz) my demo is complete. Apparently there is a bug with the + combinator which was stopping my previous example from working. Without that combinator I can't quite get the whole effect I was after (I wanted a dotted or dashed border between the header and the body of the selected tab). I was pleasantly surprised that :not() has been implemented in Mozilla so I've now achieved a demo of a cool CSS3 sidebar style system which is still usable in a CSS2 (or no CSS) browser. Here is the demo!

Hmmmm getting there

But it doesn't quite seem to work. Here is what I have so far. I don't understand why the "a.tab:target + div" selector doesn't work. When you click on one of the links, the background color in the box below should go blue. (Note, this is only likely to do anything at all in a Mozilla nightly)

Buggeration

Here I am trying to save my bandwidth and someone goes and implements the target pseudo class from CSS3 that Daniel Glazman has been enthusing about over the last few days in Mozilla. Now I have to go and download a nightly build and have a play with this new toy. Daniel has a demo but I wonder if something can't be done that is still useable by browsers that only know CSS2.

Updates

I've put a good few new pictures up. Of particular interest might be the New Years photos. Sadly I seem to have managed to make a fantastic effort at burning through my bandwidth allocation (4 gig) this month, so my Sporadic Web where the gallery is hosted may be more sporadic until the end of the month. I have about 110 megs left for the next 17 days. If I go over that it starts costing 11c a meg (which isn't too bad). Anyway it means I'll probably be turning off the DSL modem when I'm not using it. Even 11c a meg is too much to pay when some of it is caused by useless wankers who are still running unpatched IIS servers spamming me with Code Red attacks.

I'm not entirely sure where all my bandwidth has gone, most of it (approx 3.5 gig) seems to have been in the first six days of the year while I was at the cricket. I suspect the lesson might be that if a friend comes over with an old wireless card and so he can access it you :

then remember to resecure your wireless network when he goes.

Arsene Wenger for your desktop

He's not done much yet other than stand there looking a bit creepy, however I hope he'll give me a bit of commentary during the upcoming game. You can get him from the Arsenal website or more directly here.

Organisation

I bought some software to help me catalogue my CDs today. After trying a few out I settled on Music Collector Pro which seems pretty much perfect. Previously I've used gmmusic which did the job but wasn't as efficient as the batch processor in Music Collector Pro. Gmmusic had a database backend which was nice, but Music Collector Pro will do an XML export so that is almost as useful.

On the photos front I installed this software on my webserver and it seems quite pleasant to use. If you're particularly keen you could browse my sporadically available web space but there's currently not much to see.

Argh!

I don't think I can take it. Australia has 5 free to air television stations. Currently two of them are showing Jerry Lewis movies. Channel 7 is showing Visit to a Small Planet. Channel 9 is showing Artists and Models. If this wasn't grim enough, Channel 9 is following up with two more Jerry Lewis movies, Hollywood or Bust and Three Ring Circus.

I can only assume it's part of some sinister plot to drive people towards pay tv. I'd prefer a Tivo though. Perhaps I'll get my friend Anton to bring me back one from the states next time he goes. It's always a bit of a risk paying so much money for something you could potentially turn into rubble while converting it to work with Australian TV.

Something from the bar?

This looks like a nice little project

Redesign!

A fairly simple but effective design I hope. It looks and works as expected in Opera and Mozilla based browsers. It doesn't work quite as it should in Microsoft Internet Explorer. It's astounding that a company with such vast engineering resources (and some fairly impressive people) continues to bugger these things up and leave them buggered for what seems an eternity.

Fortunately when they weren't bothering to implement standards properly they were implementing whacky stuff like conditional comments. so it's fairly easy to inform your affected readers of the situation without fear of getting in anyone elses face for no reason.

Anyway, there will probably be a couple of alternate style sheets to come if I get bored, and a bit of tweaking on this one, but for now my work is done.

I've never really thought of getting a motorbike

But I could be forced to reconsider.

It's been a while

So what's happened? New years eve went well by all accounts. I don't have a hugely detailed recollection of the night but everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves and no damage was caused. The new year's day party at Tamsins was good and for the five days after that I was at the Sydney Cricket Ground watching England actually beat Australia in a test match. My friend Rich has pointed out that England have only won two tests while overseas in the last two years and I've been at both of them.

And now I'm back at work, and after a day or so I'm back into the swing of it.
